The importance of previz in VFX

The "previz" is a very important element in the realization of special effects. Before shooting, it transforms ideas into visual representations, simulating camera movements and special effects to identify and, above all, solve problems in advance!

In this article, we'll look at why previewing is essential for optimizing shooting and post-production, and ensuring smoother, more efficient productions.

First things first.

What is previz?

As mentioned in the introduction, previsualization, or "previz" is a critical step in the field of visual effects (VFX). It involves creating simplified and animated versions of scenes before the actual shoot. These sequences are produced using 3D tools and software to provide a clear visual representation of composition, camera movement, angles, and the necessary special effects.

But then...

Why is previz so essential?

Previz is essential for many reasons, particularly because it allows directors and VFX artists to share a clear, precise, and unified vision of the final production. It can be seen as a kind of virtual and visual guide, significantly reducing misunderstandings.

Moreover, previz helps to identify and resolve potential issues upfront, such as visual inconsistencies or unrealistic camera movements, and supports the creation of VFX, which can sometimes be highly complex.

It also provides a clear overview of the various scenes and sequences with VFX to be filmed. It enhances planning and efficiency during shooting days, identifies necessary props (motion capture, 3D printing, etc.), and helps reduce costs.

Effective previsualization helps you plan your budget accurately while avoiding unexpected expenses. Special effects requirements can be properly estimated, preventing financial surprises.

Additionally, by identifying issues and adjusting sequences before filming, previz minimizes the need for costly reshoots while reducing the time spent in post-production to fix errors.

Concrete examples of successful previz

At Tronatic Studio, we naturally integrate previz into our projects, enabling us to achieve some pretty remarkable results:

ADA

In this short film, the monsters were entirely created using VFX during post-production. To achieve this result, we worked in perfect harmony with the director, Anaïs Vachez.

Thanks to the previs, we were able to obtain the precise dimensions of the monsters in order to 3D print their heads for the shoot.

These 3D heads helped the actors to find their bearings better, to know where to look and, in particular, to interact more credibly as monsters.

INOXTAG

In the introduction to Inoxtag's KAIZEN document, previz played a crucial role. This scene, which combines winter storms, ice and the realistic animation of an eagle, was entirely planned using previz.

Previz enabled us to precisely define camera trajectories, the appearance of ice effects, and the eagle's behavior in its environment. By anticipating these elements, we saved precious time, while ensuring that the final scene corresponded exactly to the director's initial vision.

The use of previz in this project was also an essential communication tool between the creative and technical teams. It enabled everyone, from concept artists to animators to the post-production team, to work on a solid, shared basis.

The previz is much more than a tool: it's an indispensable step in optimizing the VFX creation process. By providing a clear, shared vision, it helps avoid costly mistakes, meet deadlines and guarantee stunning results.

At Tronatic Studio, we firmly believe that previz is a key lever in pushing the boundaries of creativity while managing technical and budgetary constraints. Thanks to it, each project becomes a well-prepared adventure, where innovation and quality come together.
